Layers of harmonised vocals and minimalistic composition seem to be all the rage with musicians these days, and it’s nothing to complain about. Many would pin point America’s, ‘Mr-Isolated-in-a-Cabin-amidst-the-Woods’ Bon Iver as the most recent catalyst for all of this, leaving a trail of fellow guitar-wielding artists to re-construct isolation in song form too.
With a musical approach described as ‘subtle and husky with a focus on honest storytelling’, songwriter Hayden Calnin is Melbourne’s equivalent. Calnin’s Triple J Unearthed page features tracks ‘Winter’, ‘City’ and ‘Summer’, a personal favourite dripping with heart wrenching falsettos and hauntingly repetitive lyrical lines.
This 22 yr. old songwriter hasn’t gone unnoticed either, winning the Melbourne heat of talent development program, ‘Telstra Road To Discovery’. So have a listen, and be amazed for yourself. Better yet, catch him live at The Worker’s Club Fitzroy on Wednesday, 9th of November.

winter is a sweet track. reminds me a bit more of volcano choir. rather than Bon Iver’s solo stuff.
