Last Thursday night, Melbourne outfit Kins were playing their third show in a four-night residency at the Builders Arms. It’s really not that often that a band blows you away straight off the bat. Kins did this. Admittedly, I only caught their last two songs, yet this was enough for me to realize that they were destined to go far.

Kins are the product of Oh Mercy’s Thom Savage solo venture. They became the four piece they are now when Jacqueline Collyer, Kieran Savage (Brother of Thom), & Simon Lam joined in on the fun.

Their music is a mix of melodic bass and prominent guitar hooks that are backed with simplistically beautiful drums. A sound that is difficult to perfect, they consistently provide music that avoids the trap of sounding too similar. They go further to make each track contain distinct brilliant moments. Their sound is stripped back, and moody. A few of their tracks have a sobering melancholy ambiance that is powerful, yet, it’s something you can put on without killing the mood, enhancing it rather. I’ve been playing through their EP’s non stop since last Thursday night, I can pick some definite influences from bands such as Radiohead, slight hints The XX and Sigur Ross can be found in there as well.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Kins in the flesh, they have a range of shows coming up before they head off to England where they will be based indefinitely. I totally recommend catching these guys if you can. I’m definitely going tomorrow night, it will be grouse.

Here are some tracks you can test out.

Enjoy.
